A HELLP Story
by Cheri
sub - 7/13/01

I also told her about the extreme pain I was having and that I couldn't sleep and was up crying.
She said that it might be my gallbladder.  Basically she blew me off.

Cheri's Story

My name is Cheri and my baby's name is Andrew.  He weighed 1 pound 6 oz. and was born on 5/24/01 and died on 5/31/01.

This was my first pregnancy and it was a rough one.  I had morning sickness for the first four months and unexplained bleeding during my fourth month.  The fifth month was a little better but I still felt sick on and off.

The six month is when I started to swell and wasn't feeling
good.  I went to my sixth month check up and my blood pressure was okay although it did go up slightly and my swelling wasn't that bad yet.  I did have a sudden increase in weight (9 pounds) that month but my doctor wasn't concerned because I didn't have the other symptoms of preeclampsia.

The seven month is when things got really bad.  The
swelling got so bad that it looked like I had elephantiasis in my legs and feet.  I also had swelling in my face and eyes and hands.  The swelling was so bad that it literally hurt to walk.

I had severe high back pain and severe stomach pain.  It felt like my stomach was going to burst open.  I called my doctor three different times about the swelling and pain and I told her the swelling does not go away in the morning and it doesn't help to lay on my left side.  I also told her about the extreme pain I was having and that I couldn't sleep and was up crying.
She said that it might be my gallbladder.  Basically she blew me off.

I tried taking Tums and Mylanta and nothing worked.  The pain was getting really bad so I went home from work early.  I could do nothing to relieve the pain.  That night I had dry heaves.

A couple of days leading up to this I also could not eat very much.  There was no room in my stomach.  The next day I asked my mom to come over.  She brought her blood pressure kit and my blood pressure was 186/104.  I called my doctor and she told me to go to the hospital.  Boy was I in for a
shock.

They took some tests and said they had to deliver the baby that night by emergency C-Section.  I was only 28 weeks.  I was terrified. Everything happened so fast.  I had so much swelling that the doctors were shocked by all oozing of edema from my organs.

They put me in ICU for 2 days.  I had severe preeclampsia with HELLP syndrome.  I had developed respiratory failure and noncardiogenic pulmonary adema.

I was discharged after five days and I am physically doing fine now.  My baby died because he had severe bleeding in the brain.
